Men's Swimmers Second, Women Fifth After Day 1 At MCCs

Milwaukee, Wis. - The first day of the MCC Swimming and Diving Championship opened with an exciting close race Thursday in Milwaukee, Wis. UWM's women are tops with 249 points, while Wright State is right behind with 243 points. Wright State leads the men's swimming and diving teams with 235 points.

On the men's side, Cleveland State finished second with 184 points, closely followed by UWM with 148 points. Illinois-Chicago is tailing the Panthers with 147, while UW-Green Bay finished fifth with 138 points and Butler in sixth with 85.

In the women's team scores, Wright State finished second behind UWM with 243 points. Green Bay placed third with 197 points. UIC ended in fourth place with 112.50 points, Cleveland State in fifth with 89, and Butler in sixth with 72.50.

In the women's events, UW-Green Bay took home the first event as it won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.19, setting a new MCC Championship record. Wright State took second with a time of 1:38.00 and UWM finished third in 1:39.48.

UWM junior Leslie Brock won the 500 freestyle in 5:05.94, while Wright State's swimmers took second and third with sophomore Heather Weil in 5:06.49 and freshman Julie Coghlan in 5:07.17.

In the 200 IM, UWGB junior Melissa Schweinert finished first in 2:08.17 and UWM sophomore Amanda Chan finished second in 2:08.92. Senior Chasi Riley of Wright State took third in 2:09.44. In the 50 free, UWGB's swimmers swept first and second places, as junior Kaye-Lani Laughna finished in 24.14 and Nicole Dedering right behind with 24.26. Wright State's Katie Tippett took third with a time of 24.38.

In the women's 3 meter diving, Wright State freshman Roberta Borkowski took first place with a score of 418.85. UWM's Amanda Maas finished second with 416.15 points, and Illinois-Chicago's Andrea Bove took third with 405.95 points.

The 400 medley relay saw Wright State win with a time of 3:54.37. UWGB took second in 3:55.82 and UWM's relay took third in 3:57.77.

In the men's 200 freestyle relay, Wright State also set a new MCC Championship record, winning the event in 1:22.70. Cleveland State came in second with 1:23.35, while UW-Green Bay finished third with 1:23.91.

In the 500 freestyle, Cleveland State's men took home first and second-place finishes. Sophomore Ryan Kuhlmey won in 4:35.80 while sophomore Andrew Hancock followed with 4:36.03. Green Bay's RJ Szelc took third in 4:37.07.

UIC junior Paul Torres won the 200 IM with a time of 1:52.34. Wright State's Drew Fiden followed with 1:52.77 for a second-place finish, and Cleveland State's Mauricio Barrios took third in 1:52.95. In the 50 freestyle, Wright State finished in the top two spots and Carl Thompson won the event in 20:48 and John Averyt took second in 20.79. Butler's John Lowell finished a close third, with a time of 20.83.

In the men's 1 meter diving, UIC's Mike Magee and Charles Rock took first and second place, respectively. Magee finished on top with 276.65 points and Rock followed with 271.25. Wright State's Trevor Downing took third with a score of 266.95.

Wright State's team took first place in the 400 medley relay in 3:21.59. Cleveland State finished second in 3:24.64, while UIC took third with a time of 3:27.60.

Events start up Friday morning with swimming prelims at 10:30 a.m. Diving finals follow at 2 p.m., while swimming finals round out at 6 p.m. A recap and results will be posted after the night's events.
