Vikings to Close Dual Action With Two Meets This Weekend

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University women's swimming & diving team will close dual action this weekend by contesting road matchups on back-to-back days.

CSU will open the weekend by facing Horizon League foe Youngstown State Friday, Feb. 2, at 5:00 p.m. The Vikings will then have their season-ending dual at Buffalo Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1:00 p.m.

The CSU women take a 7-4 dual record into the weekend, having won seven of their past nine matchups. The Vikings fell at defending League champion Oakland this past weekend, 179.5-120.5. However, that score represented the closest a League team has come to Oakland this season.

Junior Molly McNamara won a trio of individual events (100 fly, 200 fly 200 IM) against Oakland while sophomore Gabriella Marinelli came from behind to win both the 200 and 500 freestyle. Freshman Lexie Kostelnik was the runner-up in both distance freestyle events while CSU took four of the top five spots in the 100 backstroke, courtesy of freshman Alana Cartwright, junior Ashleigh Bennett, sophomore Chuchu Yang and junior Cassandra Oltman.

Cleveland State won 11 of the 14 swimming events contested in last season's meeting with Youngstown State to claim a 172.5-127.5 win. As a result, the Vikings have now claimed wins over the Penguins in six of the past 10 seasons.

Youngstown State owns a 6-6 dual mark after claiming five wins last weekend over two days in two meets contested at Illinois. The Penguins garnered wins over Butler and Eastern Illinois last weekend and had beaten League foe IUPUI the weekend prior. YSU finished seventh at the Magnus Cup earlier this season, three spots behind the Vikings.

After not facing Buffalo in dual action for over a decade, CSU and UB have resumed the series in the past two years, with the meet representing the final regular-season dual for CSU on all three occasions. The Vikings have dropped duals to the Bulls in the last two years. In last season's matchup, senior Tobie Zeller won two individual events and swam on a winning relay for CSU.

Buffalo is undefeated at 7-0 on the season in advance of final dual against the Vikings this weekend. The Bulls also took second at both the FIU Invite and the Zippy Invitational.

CSU will close the regular season next weekend at the Ohio State Winter Invitational.
