Women's Swimming and Diving Concludes Year With Banquet

CLEVELAND- The Cleveland State Vikings officially concluded a stellar 2012-13 campaign this past weekend, as the women's squad celebrated together at the team's annual year-end banquet.

The 2012-13 year was a noteworthy one for this group of Vikings, as the team finished the year undefeated in the Horizon League and 12-4 in duel meet action, placing second at the year-end Horizon League championships.

Throughout the year the women helped to re-write the CSU record book, breaking three individual records.

Three separate women broke those records in Alexandra Johansson (100 backstroke), Alice Sommerville (200 breaststroke) and Jodi Turk (1,650 freestyle).

With the 2012-13 school year coming to a close in the coming weeks the Vikings took the time to honor some top performers at their banquet Saturday. The team honored the `Top Newcomer,' `Most Improved,' `Top Duel Meet Performer,' and "Overall Top Performer.'

Freshman Jodi Turk was the first honoree, as she took home the team's `Top Newcomer' honor. Turk was strong all season long as a rookie, as she not only broke the team's 1,650 freestyle record (17:16.68), she also had the team's top times in the 500 freestyle (5:00.56) and 1,000 freestyle (10:21.90).

The next honor went to senior Jamie Puls, who took home the team's `Most Improved' award. Puls swam career-best times in 2012-13 in the 50 freestyle (.24.33), 100 freestyle (52.73) and 200 freestyle (1:55.52). Her 100 free time was good enough for third on the CSU roster, while the 50 and 200 times were fourth on the team.

Senior Alice Sommerville took home the squad's `Top Duel Meet Performer' honor. Sommerville not only broke the CSU 200 breaststroke record (2:19.89), she was a constant top swimmer for the squad all year long. For the season the senior had the team's top time in the 100 breast (1:02.73) and 200 breast, as well as the 200 IM (2:05.79). She also concluded the year with a win in the 100-yard butterfly (55.07) at the Horizon League Championships.

The final honor of the day went to junior Alexandra Johansson, who was named the team's `Overall Top Performer' for the 2012-13 season. Johansson, who broke the school's 100 backstroke record in a time of 55.67, was dominant for CSU all year long. At the season's conclusion she had the team's top time in the 50 free (23.27), 100 free (50.82), 50 butterfly (24.72), 100 butterfly (55.00), and 100 backstroke. Johansson also won the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle at the league championships to conclude her stellar season.

As the 2012-13 Cleveland State Viking women end their year, they can look back proudly on their accomplishments both in and out of the pool. This impressive group of women represented the university proudly, and the CSU program has only a bright future ahead.
