Impressive Swims Lead Viking Women at Second Day of Magnus Cup Invite

Cleveland, Ohio- The Cleveland State women's swimming and diving team continued its impressive showings Saturday at the Magnus Cup Invitational, holding onto the spot at second place in the standings.

Similar to Al Shillito with the men, the women also had a record-breaking performance coming fromAlexandra Johansson. The junior was able to break the school record in the 100 backstroke, coming in first with a time of 55.67.

On top of the 100 back school record, she also swam a lifetime best time to win the 100 butterfly (55.00), and teamed up with Alice SommervilleGretchen Hestley, and Christine Kopacko to win the 200 medley (relay time of 1:43.30).

"She had a spectacular day, absolutely spectacular day," Morton said of Johansson. "By any measure she was the swimmer of the meet today for us."

"Her competitiveness and ability to train at a high level is really paying off," he added.

Alice Sommerville is another Viking woman who came through and swam very well all day long. Not only did she join Johansson on the winning 200 medley relay, she also took a second place finish in the 100 butterfly (55.91), and had a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.52).

Christine Kopacko complemented her 200 medley relay win and 800 freestyle relay wins with a second place finish in the 200 freestyle coming in at 1:53.06.

Gretchen Hestley joined Kopacko on both those winning relays, swimming lifetime best splits in the process for the Vikings. She also had a third place finish in the 200 freestyle at 1:53.20. 

 
 
 


Overall Morton was very happy with the way the team performed on the day.

"I'm really proud of the women's team, they're really hanging tough and swimming at a high level," he said.

The Vikings will be back in the pool tomorrow morning for the final day of the three day long invitational, with prelims starting at 9:00 a.m. and finals beginning at 3:00 p.m.
