May 6, 2003

CLEVELAND - Senior Lindsay Gervais (Bucyrus, Ohio/Colonel Crawford) is co-valedictorian of the Cleveland State Class of 2003, along with Cherelle Mattox. A psychology major with a minor in communication, Gervais boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA. Commencement ceremonies take place on Saturday, May 10.

A Presidential Scholarship recipient, Gervais juggled demanding courses with a stellar athletic career. She has posted a 3.28 ERA this season with a 4-7 record and carries junior eligibility due to a stress fracture suffered last season.

Gervais is a four-time recipient of Cleveland State's Athletic Academic Excellence Award and earned a spot on the Horizon League Spring Academic Honor Roll in 2002.

Last month, she received the Barnes & Noble Director's Award at Cleveland State's annual Athletic Academic Honors Luncheon. The award recognizes the graduating student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA.

Last summer, Gervais worked seven weeks at a summer camp run by The Cleveland Clinic for children suffering from attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Through sports and discussion groups, she helped 12- to 14-year-olds improve their social, academic, motor and athletic skills.

Gervais arrived at CSU from Colonel Crawford High School in Bucyrus, where she also maintained a 4.00 GPA and played basketball, volleyball and softball. As a senior, she was selected first-team all-Ohio, notched an 18-1 record, pitched seven no-hitters with four perfect games, and owned a batting average of .402.

Cleveland State hosts the 2003 Horizon League Softball Championship May 8-10 at Viking Field. The sixth-seeded Vikings (19-28) open the tournament against No. 3 Illinois-Chicago (19-35) at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.
