GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Cleveland State softball team dropped both games by one run on Saturday (April 21), falling to Green Bay on a 5-4 count in the opener before coming up short in a 2-1 loss in the second game.
The Vikings fall to 13-33 overall and 5-9 in the Horizon League while Green Bay improves to 18-19 and 7-7 in the league.
Dara Toman started game one with a walk and eventually scored on an infield error to make it a 1-0 game.
The Phoenix took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on Amanda Omahen's bases loaded double off CSU starter Sara Shields that brought in three runs.
Shields singled and scored in the CSU third to cut the deficit to one at 3-2, but Green Bay came back with two runs in the fifth to widen the gap to 5-2.
Three Phoenix errors and four Vikings hits helped the Vikings tack on a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, but CSU couldn't complete the comeback bid.
In game two, Megan Bashak singled with one out in the first inning and advanced a base on an infield error. A Shields single put her at third base, and Bashak eventually came in to score on an illegal pitch by Green Bay starter Allison Goecks.
After that, Goecks settled in and allowed just one hit the rest of the afternoon, serving up a Caila Ferro single in the CSU fourth. Toman worked a walk in the fifth to reach safely for the 26th consecutive game, but Goecks faced just 25 batters in seven innings and one above the minimum after the first inning.
With the complete game win, Goecks improved to 6-7 on the season. She allowed just the one run while striking out seven.
Bashak pitched all six innings for the Vikings in game two and was dealt the loss to slip to 3-14. She allowed a leadoff homer to Omahen in the first inning and a leadoff single to Danielle Pozolinski in the fifth that turned in to the winning run.
She allowed just six hits and one walk while striking out eight.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series with a 12:00 p.m. EST game tomorrow (April 22). The matchup with the Phoenix will be Cleveland State's final road game of the season before ending the year with nine home games against Horizon League foes.
