Senior Farewell: Cleveland State Softball Caps Season In Saturday Doubleheader

Cleveland, OH-Cleveland State celebrated the career of Taylor Betz as she played her final game in a Cleveland State uniform on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings fell in a doubleheader to Robert Morris to finish 11-12 in the Horizon League and 15-32 overall.

Betz, who had not played this season due to injury, came on in relief and pitched the final inning of the second game to close out her career. She retired two of the first three hitters she faced and received a warm ovation from the crowd. Betz and her family were honored prior to the game with an on-field ceremony and jersey presentation.

RMU won the first game 4-1 and the second game 5-0. The Colonials wrap up the regular season with a 14-8 record in league play.

RMU took an early lead in the first game with a run in the top of the first. The Vikings settled down and held RMU scoreless for the next three frames.

Cleveland State tied the score in the bottom of the fourth as Sophie Spellman connected for her third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field which made it 1-1.

RMU added a single run in the fifth and two in the sixth to re-take the lead. The Colonials held the Vikings in check the rest of the way in taking game one.

In game two, the Vikings once again found themselves in an early hole as RMU struck for three runs in the top of the first inning. Cleveland State struggled offensively once again throughout the game. The Vikings recorded six hits, but just one went for extra bases, as the Vikings could not push a run across.

RMU tacked on two additional insurance runs for the 5-0 final score.

Cleveland State finishes the season in seventh place in the Horizon League standings, one spot shy of qualifying for next week's Horizon League Tournament.
