Cleveland State Softball Wins Fourth Straight #HLSB Series with Win over Green Bay

Cleveland, OH-The Cleveland State softball team won its fourth consecutive Horizon League series with a win in Saturday's series finale over Green Bay. The Vikings defeated the Phoenix 7-1 thanks to an early big inning and another great performance from Melissa Holzopfel in the circle.

The Vikings struck for four runs in the second and took advantage of several Green Bay miscues to seize the early lead. Cleveland State got the first two runners aboard with back-to-back singles and following a sac bunt had runners at second and third with one out.

A wild pitch and a throwing error allowed both Holzopfel and Peyton Mueller-Stenz to score and make it 2-0 Vikings. A single and a walk put two more runners on and the Vikings took advantage of three additional Green Bay errors to push two more runs across for an early 4-0 lead.

The Vikings struck for single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to widen the lead to 7-0 which was more than enough for Melissa Holzopfel. She went the distance yielding just one earned run on six hits. She also struck out four.

Three Vikings finished with multi-hit games, including Holzopfel, Emily Yacapraro and Sophie Spellman, who finished 3-4 on the day with a run scored.

The win allowed the Vikings to take two of three in the series after splitting a doubleheader with the Phoenix yesterday. Cleveland State improves to 9-5 in Horizon League play and sits in second place in the league standings.
