Softball Hits the Road for First Time in 2018

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State softball team will hit the road for the first time this season, heading to the NC A&T Tournament for four games this weekend in Greensboro, NC.

The Vikings open play in the tournament with two games on Friday (Feb. 16), playing Maryland-Eastern Shore at 9:30 am and Howard at 12:00 pm. On Saturday (Feb. 17), CSU will play host NC A&T at 12:00 pm and conclude the tournament with a 9:30 am contest against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Sunday (Feb. 18).

The Vikings opened the 2018 season last weekend at the CSU Dome Touranment, winning three of their five games. After dropping their first two games on Friday, CSU rebounded to win two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Junior Macy Kaisk led the Vikings at the plate, hitting .538 (7-13) with three runs, two doubles, two home runs and six RBI over four games en route to earning Horizon League Player of the Week honors.

Senior Mel Woodard hit .385 (5-13) with a run and an RBI, while senior Kait Gairing batted .333 (3-9) with two runs, a homer, three runs batted in and six walks. Emery Sipe drew nine walks over the weekend, including a CSU single game record five walks in a 9-8 win over Robert Morris on Saturday, while Bailee Gray hit .308 (4-13) with three runs and an RBI.

In the circle, senior Mackenzie Joecken earned two of CSU's three wins, while Kristin Catalano earned the other and Alicia Major and Hannah Breeded each had saves.

Catalano worked 6.2 innings of relief, giving up just two runs in three appearances.

Kaisk started two games for CSU, posting a 3.00 ERA with three strikeouts.

Following the four games this weekend, the Vikings are back in action for five games at the Belmont Tournament (Feb. 23-25).
