Joecken & Ries Power Vikings Past Indiana State, 8-4

CLERMONT, Fla. - Mackenzie Joecken and Riley Ries drove in three runs each and Joecken pitched 5 1/3 innings to lead Cleveland State to an 8-4 win over Indiana State on Tuesday.

Joecken finished 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI, while Ries delivered a three-run double. Joecken also worked 5 2/3 innings in the circle, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits to earn the victory.

Kloee Cuckler worked the final 1 1/3 innings to earn her first career save.

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Joecken's solo homer and added two runs in the third on Joecken's two-run double that scored Macy Kaisk and Mel Woodard who both singled earlier in the inning.

CSU added four runs in the fourth inning - all with two outs - to extend the lead to 7-0. Kaisk drew an RBI walk and Ries followed with a bases clearing double that scored three.

The Sycamores got on the board in the fifth inning, but CSU came right back in the bottom half of the inning on Bailee Gray's RBI fielder's choice to push the lead to 8-1. ISU added two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to slice the deficit to 8-4 and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded.

But Cuckler got Gabi Carter to foul out to third base to end the game.

Woodard and Kaisk both scored two runs for CSU and each also had one hit to extend their hit streaks to six straight games.

The Vikings are back in action on Friday (March 17) when CSU plays its first of two games at the FGCU Tournament. CSU plays Canisius at 10:00 am and IUPUI at 12:15 pm.
