CSU's 7th Inning Rally Falls Just Short as Vikings Eliminated at League Tournament, 4-3, to Wright State

CHICAGO, Ill. - Fifth-seeded Cleveland State's seventh inning rally fell one run short as the Vikings season was ended with a 4-3 setback to second-seeded Wright State at the Horizon League tournament at Flames Field.

The Vikings end their season at 21-32, while Wright State improves to 36-22 and advances to take on the loser of today's game between top-seeded UIC and sixth-seeded Valparaiso for the right to advance to the tomorrow's championship against the UIC-Valpo winner.

CSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Mel Woodard scored on a Raider error. It stayed that way until the fifth when the Raiders sent nine to the plate and scored four times to take a 4-1 lead.

Erica McNew sliced the CSU deficit in half with a home run to lead off the sixth inning. It was her 51st career homer as she finished her career ranked second all-time in school history. It was also McNew's 150th career RBI - extending her career record - and her 141st run scored - tying Dara Toman for the all-time record in program history.

After Susan Knight retired the Raiders in order in the bottom half of the sixth, the Vikings began to rally in the seventh.

Mackenzie Joecken led off with a walk and moved to second on Kait Gairing's single. A fielder's choice forced out pinch runner Darien Ward at third base and Katelind Phillips followed with a single to leftfield to load the bases.

Knight followed with an RBI groudout and McNew was intentionally walked - her 27th intentional pass of the season - to load the bases, but a ground out to second base ended the CSU rally.

The game was the final one for CSU's six seniors - Broschk, Knight, McNew, Phillips, Alisha Silva and Ward.
