Vikings Drop Doubleheader to Green Bay; Will Be #5 Seed in League Tournament

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland state softball team dropped two games to Green Bay on the final day of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Viking Field. 

CSU fell in the opener, 3-1, and dropped the regular season finale, 6-3.

Today was Senior Day with CSU's six seniors - Alyson Broschk, Susan Knight, Erica McNew, Katelind Phillips, Alisha Silva and Darien Ward honored in a pre-game ceremony.

CSU finished the regular season at 19-30 overall and 12-12 in the Horizon League, while Green Bay concluded the regular season at 21-31 overall and 12-10 in the League.

The Vikings will be the No. 5 seed in next week's Horizon League Championship and will open the tournament with a first round game against fourth-seeded Green Bay on Wednesday (May 11) at 1:00 pm ET in Chicago. The tournament will take place at top-seeded UIC.

Wright State is the No. 2 seed, while Youngstown State is the third-seed and Valparaiso the sixth-seed.

GAME 1: Green Bay 3, Cleveland State 1

Green Bay scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a tie game and claim a 3-1 victory over Cleveland State in the first game of today's doubleheader.

The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with an unearned run and the Vikings tied the contest with a run in the sixth. Knight led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Riley Ries. After a groundout moved Knight to third base, Broschk followed with an RBI double to knot the contest.

Green Bay loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and the Vikings appeared to get out of the inning when Phillips fielded a ground ball and raced to second base for a force out. However, the umpires met and reversed the call on the field to safe, allowing Kelli Hutchinson to score the go-ahead run.

Another fielder's choice followed to push the Green Bay lead to 3-1 and CSU was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh.

CSU was held to five hits in the game, one each by Phillips, Erica McNew, Knight, Woodard and Broschk.

Macy Kaisk went the distance, giving up three runs (two earned) on nine hits and striking out five.

GAME 1: Green Bay 6, Cleveland State 3 

Green Bay used a three-run fifth inning to break open the game and claim a 6-3 win over Cleveland State in the final game of the regular season.

The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first, but CSU responded on Woodard's bases loaded RBI single in the bottom of the first that scored Phillips to knot the contest at 1-1.

Brennan Engel's RBI single in the third gave the Phoenix a 2-1 lead and Engel broke the game open with a three-run homer in the fifth to push the advantage to 5-1.

Woodard's leadoff homer in the sixth pulled the Vikings within 5-2 and Silva added a two-out, RBI triple that scored Kait Gairing and pull CSU within 5-3.

However, Allie Taylor's solo homer in the seventh pushed the Phoenix lead back to 6-3.

Phillips went 3-for-4 with a run in game two, while Woodard went 2-for-4.
