Vikings Win Two at Detroit; Sweep Three Game Series

DETROIT, Mich. - The Cleveland State softball team swept a doubleheader at Detroit on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game weekend sweep of the Titans.

The wins improved CSU to 18-28 overall and 11-10 in the Horizon League. The Vikings have won 10 of their last 13 games, including six of their last seven. Detroit fell to 17-36 overall and 7-14 in the League.

CSU closes the regular season this weekend with a three-game series versus Green Bay at Viking Field. The first game is slated for Friday (May 6) and 3:00 pm with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday (May 7) at 12:00 pm.

GAME 1: Cleveland State 9, Detroit 3

Cleveland State scored five runs over the final two innings to break open a close game and win the first game on Sunday's doubleheader, 9-3.

Erica McNew went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Susan Knight, Riley Ries and Mel Woodard had two hits each.

Macy Kaisk fired a complete game, giving up three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Detroit scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, but a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second helped CSU pull even at 2-2. Katelind Phillips drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead and Ries' RBI single scored Darien Ward in the fifth to push the lead to 4-2.

McNew's two-run homer and an RBI single by Alyson Broschk in the sixth broke the game open as the Vikings' lead grew to 7-2 and McNew delivered a two-run single in the seventh to push the lead to 9-2. Detroit added a run in the seventh.

GAME 2: Cleveland State 7, Detroit 1

Erica McNew and Riley Ries hit home runs and Susan Knight fired a complete game to lead the Vikings to a 7-1 win over Detroit in the series finale.

Knight gave up just one run on six hits and struck out six as she fired her fourth straight complete game victory.

CSU jumped on the board quickly with four runs in the first as Katelind Phillips led off the game with a single and McNew followed with a two-run homer. After Knight reached on a Titan error, Ries drilled a two-run homer to rightcenter.

The Titans scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the first as Knight held Detroit to just four hits over the final six innings.

Mackenzie Joecken's two-run single in the fifth pushed CSU's lead to 6-1 and Alyson Broschk had an RBI single in the sixth for the Vikings final run of the game.

Phillips had two of CSU's seven hits, while McNew, Ries, Broschk, Joecken and Silva all had one hit.
