Erica McNew Named Horizon League Softball Player of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State senior Erica McNew (Canton, Ohio) has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week for her performance in CSU's six games last week.

McNew hit .600 (6-10) with eight runs, one double, three home runs and nine RBI in six League games last week. She posted a 1.600 slugging percentage and and .846 on-base percentage, reaching base in 22 of her 26 plate appearances last week.

She drew 16 walks, including 11 intentional walks over the six games and was intentionally walked four times in the second and third games of the series at Valparaiso, tying an NCAA single game record for intentional walks in a game.

She is just the second player in NCAA history to draw four intentional walks in a game on two occasions.
In the series opener agaisnt Valparaiso on Friday, McNew hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, breaking a 2-2 tie and giving CSU a 5-2 win.
She has reached base safely in her last 14 plate appearances, her final at-bat against Youngstown State on Thursday and all 13 plate appearances at Valpo this weekend, tied for the second longest streak in NCAA history and four shy of tying the record.


McNew and the Vikings are back in action for a three-game series against Northern Kentucky at Viking Field this weekend. The teams play a single game on Friday (April 22) at 4:00 pm and a doubleheader on Saturday (April 23) at 12:00 pm.
