Vikings Drop Pair of One Run Games at Wright State

FAIRBORN, Ohio - Cleveland State dropped a pair of one run games at Wright State on Sunday afternoon to conclude a three-game Horizon League series.

Katelind Phillips went 5-for-8 with a run, three doubles and an RBI in the two games today, while Erica McNew was 3-for-5 with two homers and drew three walks. Kait Gairing drove in two runs and scored twice, while Alisa Silva was 2-for-4 with a double, a run and two walks in the twinbill.

WSU swept the three-game series from the Vikings after a win in Friday's opener.

GAME 1: Wright State 5, Cleveland State 4

McNew gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead with a two-out solo homer in the third, but the Raiders came back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Mel Woodard led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to cut the Raider lead to 3-2, but a pair of WSU runs in the fifth extened its lead to 5-2.

Woodard led off the sixth with a single and Gairing followed with a two-run homer to bring CSU within one run at 5-4, but the Vikings could not plate the tying run.

Phillips, Woodard and McNew all had two hits, while Macy Kaisk worked all six innings in the circle and stuck out three.

GAME 2: Wright State 7, Cleveland State 6

The Raiders struck quickly in the series finale, scoring five runs in the first inning and another in the second to take a 6-0 lead.

McNew got the Vikings on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, her seventh of the season, and Alyson Broschk added a two-out single that scored Susan Knight to cut the CSU deficit to 6-2.

WSU added a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 7-2, but a Marissa Marcelli RBI groundout and Riley Ries sacrifice fly in the fifth brought the Vikings within 7-4.

CSU added two more runs in the sixth on Silva's RBI double and an RBI single from Phillips, but Silva was stranded at third base. In the seventh, Ries led off with a single and McNew was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second, but the Raiders retired the next three batters to hold on for the win.

Phillips went 3-for-4 in the finale, while Ries had two hits. Susan Knight and Kristin Catalano combined to work the final five innings, limiting the Raiders to just one run on five hits, while striking out three.
