Ries' Grand Slam Forces Extra Innings, But Vikings Fall at Memphis, 5-4

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Freshman Riley Ries hit a game-tying grand slam in the seventh inning, but Memphis used a run in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 5-4 victory over Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings trailed 4-0 heading into the seventh inning and Marissa Marcelli drew a walk around a pair of CSU strikeouts A walk to Katelind Phillips was followed by a fielder's choice by Sidney Morgan to load the bases and Ries followed with her first career homer to tie the contest at 4-4.

Memphis led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and pinch runner Addison Maxwell moved to second base on a sacrifice, but was stranded there, forcing extra innings.

In the top of the eight, Marcelli delivered a two-out single for the Vikings, but the Tigers got out of the inning without any further damage. In the bottom of the eighth, Lindsay Crowdus drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a groundout.

She scored the winning run on a CSU error.

Memphis jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to a run in the third inning and three more in the fifth.

Phillips, Ries, Erica McNew, Dyonne Vargas, Macy Kaisk and Marcelli all had one hit for the Vikings.

The Vikings fell to 5-16 this year.

CSU returns to action on Friday (March 25) when the Vikings host Niagara for a doubleheader. The first game is slated for 1:00 pm.
