CLEVELAND, Ohio - Katelind Phillips went a combined 6-for-7 over two games as the Cleveland State softball team split its first two games of the season at the CSU Dome Invitational on Friday.

The Vikings dropped today's opener, 6-5, to Morehead State, but rallied to earn a 6-4 victory over Niagara in the nightcap.

Against Niagara, Phillips went 4-for-4 with two runs, a double and an RBI, while Mackenzie Joecken and Alyson Broschk drove in two runs apiece.

Broschk gave the Vikings a quick 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the first inning. Phillips delivered a one out single in the third and Joecken followed with a two-run home run to leftfield as the Vikings extended their lead to 4-0.

The lead reached 6-0 in the fourth inning as Susan Knight's sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Bailee Gray and Phillips followed with an RBI single to score Emma Nicholas.

The Purple Eagles got on the board with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to slice the CSU lead to 6-3. Niagara cut its deficit to 6-4 on an RBI single by Rebecca Saggiomo and brought the game-winning run to the plate, but Joecken got Brianna Clark to ground out to second base to end the game.

Macy Kaisk made her first career start against Niagara, working the first four innings, giving up two runs on six hits with one strikeout to earn the win.

In the opener, CSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Phillips plated the first run of the season, reaching on a triple and scoring on an Erica McNew ground out. Nicholas added a two-run homer in the second inning and Riley Ries drew a bases loaded walk in the third to make it 4-0.

Morehead State cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth on back-to-back homers from Karly Thompson and Robyn Leighton.

McNew's homer to lead off the seventh inning gave the Vikings a 5-2 lead, but the Eagles answered with four runs in the bottom half of the seventh, capped by a three-run, walk-off home run by Laine Simmons.

Nicholas finished 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI in game one, while Phillips was 2-for-3 with a run and McNew finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a pair of runs batted in.
