Vikings Drop Two to Oakland

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Katelind Phillips and Alyson Broschk both had three hits and Cynthia Woodard hit her league-leading 22nd homer of the season, but Cleveland State dropped two games to Oakland on Saturday afternoon at Viking Field.

The Vikings dropped the opener in nine innings, 3-2, and fell in the nightcap, 8-3.

Phillips was 3-for-5 in the twinbill, while Broschk went 3-for-7 with a double, a homer and four RBI in the two games to pace the Viking offense.

CSU fell to 21-22 overall and 6-9 in the Horizon League, while Oakland improved to 22-19 overall and stayed in first place in the league at 13-4.

A Broschk solo homer with one out in the fourth gave CSU a 1-0 lead, but the Golden Grizzlies used an RBI single from Lauren Mead in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1.

Sarah Cupp gave Oakland a 2-1 lead with a solo homer in the sixth, but Woodard answered with her 22nd home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning to knot the game at 2-2.

It stayed that way until the ninth when Oakland's Courtnee Johnson led off the inning with a double and scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a CSU error.

Oakland jumped out to a 6-0 lead after five innings in game two with single tallies in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings and two more runs in the sixth.

The Vikings battled back in the sixth for three runs with two outs. Woodard drew an intentional walk to put runners on first and second and Erica McNew reached on an error to load the bases.

Broschk followed with a three-run double to left centerfield to slice the CSU deficit to 6-3, but Oakland added two more runs in the seventh to provide the final margin.

The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday (April 28) when CSU travels to Akron for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. CSU returns home to host Detroit for a doubleheader on Wednesday (April 29) at 2:00 p.m. The games are make-up contests from earlier in the season.
