Softball Sweeps Twinbill From Niagara With Two Shutouts

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Susan Knight and Alex Radjen combined to allow just four hits as Cleveland State swept a doubleheader from Niagara on Wednesday afternoon at Viking Field.

The Vikings won the opener, 8-0, and the second game, 9-0. Both games were five inning affairs.

CSU improved to 15-10 this season with the two wins.

Knight allowed just one hit in game one and struck out two to improve to 7-4 this season. Radjen was just as impressive in the second game, surrendering just three hits and fanning four in moving to 5-3 this season.

Cynthia Woodard paced the CSU offense, going 6-for-7 with three runs and five RBI in the two contests. She hit her league-leading 12th homer of the season in game one.

CSU pounded out 23 hits in the two games, including 17 in the finale.

In game one, the Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead with five runs in the first inning. Woodard hit a two-run homer, while Katelind Phillips delivered an RBI double and Mackenzie Joecken hit a two-run double.

It stayed that way until the fifth inning when Knight drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a wild pitch. Alyson Broschk ended the game with a two-run double that scored Sydney Choe and Woodard.

Woodard and Broschk both had two hits in the opener, while the duo and Joecken all drove in two runs.

Game two started the same way as the first four CSU batters had hits as the Vikings scored five runs in the first inning.

An RBI single in the third by Kait Gairing and a solo homer by Knight in the fourth extended CSU's lead to 7-0 and Woodard ended the game in the fifth with a two-out, two-run double.

Woodard finished game two 4-for-4 with three RBI as eight of CSU's nine starters recorded a hit. Gairing finished 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Nena Doran, Knight and Hannah Yoe all had two hits.

The Vikings are slated to return to action on Friday (March 27) when CSU hosts Detroit at 3:00 p.m. at Viking Field.
