Vikings Outslug Abilene Christian, 14-11

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Cleveland State pounded out 14 hits, including a single game school record seven home runs, to claim a 14-11 victory over Abilene Christian on Saturday morning at the Dolphin Classic.

CSU's fourth and final game of the tournament was called due to rain with CSU leading 3-0 in the third inning.

Alyson Broschk and Mackenzie Joecken each hit two homers, while Cynthia Woodard, Erica McNew and Sydney Morgan had one home run each. The seven homers broke the old school record of four home runs in a game, set two times.'

Eight of CSU's nine starters had a hit, while McNew, Broschk and Joecken all drove in three runs.

ACU scored a single run in the top of the first, but the Vikings responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning, all with two outs. McNew had an RBI, while Broschk and Morgan both hit two-run homers to give the Vikings an early lead.

Abilene Christian scored four runs in the third inning to tie the contest at 5-5, but a Katelind Phillips RBI groundout in the bottom of the third scored McNew as the Vikings regained a 6-5 lead.

The Wildcats plated six runs in the fourth to take an 11-6 lead and the Vikings responded once again with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to knot the contest at 11-11. Joecken led off the inning with a solo homer and Susan Knight delivered a one out double to score Nena Doran who had doubled.

After the Wildcats recorded the second out, McNew followed with a two-run homer and Broschk added her second home run of the morning to tie the game at 11-11.

Morgan led off the fifth with a walk and scored on Joecken's second homer of the day and Woodard belted CSU's seventh home run of the morning in the sixth, providing the final margin.

Knight worked the final four innings to earn the win and move to 3-1 this year. She gave up just three hits and struck out 10.

CSU finished 2-1 at the Dolphin Classic.

The Vikings are back in action on Saturday and Sunday (March 7-8) with three games at the SE Missouri State Tournament.
