Vikings Fall at Wright State, 6-5, in League Tournament

FAIRBORN, Ohio – The fifth-seeded Cleveland State softball team had its season come to an end with a 6-5 setback to second-seeded Wright State at the Horizon League tournament on Thursday afternoon.

CSU finishes the season with a 24-20 overall record, while the Raiders advance to another elimination game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. today against either No. 4 Youngstown State or No. 6 UIC.

The Vikings had a chance to score in the first inning, using back-to-back one out singles from Hannah Yoe and Cynthia Woodard and a walk to Erica McNew to load the bases. However, the Raiders were able to escape any damage with an inning ending double play.

WSU was able to tally a run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly, but the Vikings came right back to load the bases in the second as the first three batters reached base en route to a five run second inning. Janessa Rivera-Keahi, Nena Doran and Woodard had RBI singles, while Yoe delivered a two-run single as the first seven batters of the inning reached base, helping CSU to a 5-1 lead.

However, the Raiders responded with a run in the second, a two-run homer by Taylor Knore in the third and two more runs in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead.

The Vikings had a chance to tie the contest in the sixth inning when Yoe lined a single to right field, but Alisha Silva was called out on a close play at home plate as she tried to score from first base after an error on the WSU right fielder.

Yoe finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Woodard went 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Vikings pounded out 11 hits.
