Softball Falls to St. John's, 4-3

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Susan Knight scattered six hits over six innings and Cynthia Woodard drove in two runs, but St. John's scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth to claim a 4-3 win over Cleveland State on Sunday at the USF Under Armour Classic.

The Vikings fell to 10-8 this year, while SJU improved to 8-11.

The Red Storm scored two runs in the second to take an early 2-0 lead as Kelsey Moyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Lexi Robles delivered an RBI single.

CSU came right back with two runs in the third as Hannah Yoe was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Knight reached on an error. The duo moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Nena Doran and Woodard followed with a two-run double to knot the contest at 2-2.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when SJU regained the lead on a sacrifice fly, but once again, the Vikings responded on a Yoe RBI single in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

However, Moyer came through with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth which proved to be the game-winning run.

The Vikings had a chance to even the contest again in the seventh as Knight drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Doran. However, back-to-back flyouts to centerfield ended the contest.

Woodard, Sara Shields and Yoe had one hit each as CSU was limited to three hits.

Knight went all six innings, striking out three.

CSU is back in action on Monday (March 10) when the Vikings play Maine at 12:00 p.m.
