CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland State sophomore midfielder Lisa Conway, who scored a goal and set a school record with three assists in Sunday's season-opening women's soccer victory over Delaware State, has been named the first Horizon League Women's Soccer Player of the Week for the 2006 season. The Horizon League office made the announcement on Monday (Aug. 28).

Conway, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, is the first Viking player ever to receive the award.

"This is a nice honor for both Lisa and the entire soccer team," head coach Derrek Falor said. "She did a very nice job of running our system on Sunday and it showed in the results that we had offensively.

"Lisa is one of the players who we will rely on this season to help set the flow offensively for us. If she continues to play at the level that she has during the preseason and the season opener, than she will have a very good year."

Conway earns the honor after her record-setting performance in the 6-0 win over Delaware State, a victory that ended CSU's 39-match winless streak that dated back to the start of the program in 2004.

Conway helped get the scoring started early on Sunday, assisting on Shayna Back's goal just five minutes into the contest and then scored in the 24th minute to give CSU a 3-0 lead.

Conway came back to assist on a pair of Ashley Walchack markers in the second half to become the first player in CSU history to have more than one assist in a game. She also tied her own school record for assists in a season.

As a freshman in 2005, Conway started 12 of the 15 matches that she played in, leading the team with three assists.

The Vikings will put their 1-0 record on the line this afternoon (Aug. 28) beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Kent State.
