GREEN BAY, Wis. --- UW-Milwaukee scored four goals in each half to run away with an 8-0 decision over Cleveland State on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship.

"The final score of today's match wasn't indicative of the type of effort that we gave on the field today," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "UW-Milwaukee showed why they were the regular season champion of the league this year and unfortunately, we weren't able to keep up with their play.

"From a wins-and-losses perspective, I am disappointed with our results this year because I don't think that they show the development that this program has shown since last year. Despite playing against teams with greater experience and greater depth, I thought that there were several matches that could have been won had a play or two gone the other way.

"Now it is time to take a short break to get healthy and then get right back into the weight room and into winter conditioning. We are on the right track towards developing a championship program and it is only a matter of time and a lot of hard work before we get there. We don't lose a single player from this year's team and if our returners can show a similar development from this year to next like they did from last year to this season, then the wins will come next year."

The match was for all intents and purposes over early as Jodi Klagos scored goals at the 10:04 and 12:17 marks to put the Panthers ahead for good. Amanda Winn, the only other player to score multiple goals, added a pair of goals in the final four minutes of the first half to put the contest away.

The offensive explosion continued in the second half for the Panthers, as they netted four more goals. Molly Duffy and Joanna Severson each netted their first goals of season; Duffy headed in her tally at the 63:35 mark and Severson scored on a volley off the fingers of CSU goalkeeper Melisa Mazenac. Pam Shipway (3) and Andrea Kramer (2) also scored for the Panthers.

UW-Milwaukee totaled 29 shots on the match, 13 on goal, compared to none for the Vikings.

With the loss, Cleveland State ended the season at 0-18-1. UW-Milwaukee (11-4-3) moves on to face the winner of match two between #4 Wright State and #5 Butler on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. CT.

The 2005 Horizon League Women's Soccer Championship will be held Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 3-6, at Aldo Santaga Stadium on the campus of UW-Green Bay. The winner of Sunday's championship match will earn the League's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, which will begin Nov. 11 at campus sites.
