CLEVELAND, Ohio - The fourth-seeded Cleveland State women's soccer team had its season come to an end with a 1-0 setback to fifth-seeded Wright State in the opening round of the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday afternoon at Krenzler Field.
The Vikings conclude their season at 10-7-2, setting a school record for most wins in a season, while the Raiders improve 9-7-3.
WSU moves on to the semifinals to face No. 2 seeded Detroit on Friday in Milwaukee. Top-seeded Milwaukee will play sixth-seeded Butler in the other semifinal. Butler defeated third-seeded Valparaiso today on penalty kicks in the other opening round match.
"I am proud of the way that we battled today and fought to the very end," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We gave ourselves chances and hit two posts. You can't ask for better looks. It just didn't go our way today."
After a scoreless first half, WSU's Bekah Bonny gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 47:08 mark. It would be the only tally WSU needed.
CSU had several good scoring chances, the final coming with about 15 seconds on the clock when Natalie Daniels got by the keeper only to watch her flick hit the post and bounce out of bounds.
"We'll take that look every time," Falor said. "Nat did everything in her power to get a look on goal, it just didn't go in."
Becky Williams made two saves for the Vikings, while Brooke McCurdy made six for the Raiders.
