STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- Julie Kenkel scored just eight minutes into the match and Stephanie Paulie added a pair of goals as Loyola knocked off Cleveland State, 3-0 on Sunday at Foltz Field in the regular season finale for both teams.
"The 3-0 score is not very indicative of how closely this match was contested," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "We matched Loyola in midfield play and we created a number of very solid scoring opportunities that we were not able to capitalize on. We had a solid defensive effort as well and we should have been able to limit Loyola to less than three goals.
"I'm going to start sounding like a broken record, but I am impressed with how we have handled the adversity of this season and the struggle of adapting to the level of play that collegiate demands. Effort and intensity has not been a problem over the last couple of weeks and that is truly something special to say about a team that has not enjoyed much success."
Loyola would get all the scoring it would need when Kenkel took a pass from Heather Sorgatz and blasted a shot past Ashley Kidwell from 10 yards out to give the Ramblers a 1-0 lead just 8:36 into the contest.
Pauli scored the first of her two markers at the 36:46 mark when she headed a cross from Lindsay Faron into the net. Pauli would then close out the scoring in the 70th minute when she fired a shot to the short side that Kidwell got a hand on but couldn't stop.
Cleveland State was out-shot, 23-7 in the match with Viking netminder Ashley Kidwell recording nine saves.
The loss leaves the Vikings as the eighth seed in this week's Horizon League Championships. CSU will face regular season champion UW-Milwaukee in first round play on Thursday (Nov. 4) in Indianapolis. Loyola, which improved to 3-3-1 in league play, will be the fourth seed and play Wright State in the opening round. The winners of those two games will meet in the semi-finals on Friday (Nov. 5).
