CLEVELAND, Ohio- Two goals from Detroit's Kaitlyn Quarrell was enough for the Titans to upset the fourth seeded Cleveland State Vikings Saturday evening at Krenzler Field. Sylvia Olsby scored the only goal for the Vikes.
"Everything is a learning experience," head coach Derrek Falor said. "This was a game where we did not play our best. Detroit fought hard and controlled the ball and in that perspective deserved the win."
The Vikings took charge of the game and within the first quarter of an hour had the lead. Natalie Daniels swung a corner in from the left side into the box, where it was met by Sylvia Olsby.
Olsby knocked the ball in. The ball was cleared off the line by the Titans after Olsby got a touch on it, but the line referee signaled the goal and the Viking lead 1-0 at the 31:14 mark. \
"I think we just did not have enough of an instinct to have the goal stick," Falor said. "
The goal was Olsby's fifth of the year, but also the Viking's 24th goal of the 2010 campaign, which is a new school record.
Detroit answered late in the first half to tie the game up at one. With 3:29 left, Kaitlyn Quarrell claimed her fourth of the year.
Quarrell possessed the ball in Detroit's attacking zone, quickly turned around, towards the net, ripped a right-footed shot from 20 yards out that beat Cleveland State goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich, hit the top crossbar, but fell into the back of the net, tying the game at 1-1.
"Once we score first we have been able to control the tempo," Falor said. "The lesson of the night is that in a playoff game you are never satisfied, not even for one second."
The Titans took the lead with just 1:49 left in the match. Quarrell again beat the Vikings as she took the shot from 12 yards out and put the ball past Zinkiewich for Detorit's game winner.
The loss was the second of the month to the Titans, as Cleveland State fell 1-0 in Detroit (Oct 10),
"I think its all mentality," Falor said. "Up to this year we have been the underdog and it was ok to scrap and claw. At the end of the day we were not concerned about a result as long as if we played hard. This year, we knew we were a good team and we knew what we needed to do and to keep doing it.
"I think we need to build on is that we no longer can just play hard and try, we need had some success and it has been better than what we have done, but we need to build on individual competitiveness."
The Vikings finish the 2010 campaign with a record of 9-8-2 and 5-4 in the Horizon League. Detroit moves on to the Horizon League Semifinals.
