CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Canisius received goals from four different players, he first coming in the 19th minute of the match, as the Golden Griffins defeated Cleveland State, 4-0, on Wednesday night at the Demske Sports Complex.

The loss drops the Vikings to 3-13-1 on the season while Canisius improves to 11-3-2.

"We just didn't kick the ball well," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "We did some things differently to experiment offensively and that resulted in some additional opportunities, but the quality of those chances was not very good.

"Our focus didn't seem to be on the match. With so much riding on Sunday's match at Youngstown State, it just didn't seem like we were ready to play a good non-league opponent like Canisius. We played with them for 90 minutes, matching them pretty much shot for shot but they were able to convert their opportunities.

"We were a little sloppy defensively, especially in the box because we gave them several point blank shots that are very hard to stop," Falor added.

Meagan Jones opened the scoring at the 18:47 mark when she took a cross from Kelly Reinwald and converted from 10 yards out to give the Golden Griffins a 1-0 lead.

The score would hold until the 39:12 mark the Vikings attempt to clear the ball out of the box was stolen away by Camille Blum, who launched a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net.

The deficit would rise to 3-0 in the 49th minute when Viking goalie Kelly Zinkiewich stopped a shot by Sylvia Kowalski, but Christina Gullo was able to convert the rebound.

Reinwald closed out the scoring at the 57:56 mark when she took a pass from Kowalski and scored from 10 yards out.

Canisius had a 21-15 edge in shots in the contest with Zinkiewich making six saves for the Vikings and Shannon Saunders adding one. Lesley Ivinac made five saves in recording the shutout.

The Vikings close the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 25) with a 1:00 p.m. match at Youngstown State. CSU is currently in seventh place in the league standings, needing a win over the Penguins to potentially qualify for next week's Horizon League Championship.

"It all comes down to this one match," Falor said. "Either we beat Youngstown State, or the season is over."
