CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Loyola scored a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half and Rambler Cynthia Morote-Ariza had an assist on all three goals as Loyola raced past the Vikings, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Krenzler Field.
Loyola, who improved to 7-7 overall, sits atop the league standings with a 3-0 mark. CSU drops to 4-7-1 overall and 0-2-1 in league play.
"I thought this match played out a lot like our tie against Wright State, but we weren't able to finish the plays defensively," CSU head coach Derrek Falor said. "We did a nice job of keeping our defensive shape and withstanding their charges, but we had out problems on set plays.
"They are a talented team from top to bottom. We went into the match trying to limit the scoring opportunities for Morote-Ariza because she has killed us with her goals in the past. Unfortunately, she took what we gave her and decided to set up her teammates today.
"We made some very nice plays at both ends of the field, but we never were able to put together a run that allowed us to get on the scoreboard."
After a scoreless first 35 minutes, Loyola opened the scoring at the 35:08 mark when Morote-Ariza's pass from the left wing found Jackie Vera open on the backside. After gathering in the pass and taking one dribble, she let loose with a blast that skipped off the near post and into the goal.
Loyola made it 2-0 in the 39th minute when Morote-Arizza perfectly placed a free kick from near midfield to the far side of the post where Allison Colhoff got her head on it enough to redirect the cross on a high-arcing loop into the back corner of the net.
"The first two goals were very difficult to stop, but we could have defended the play better." Falor said. "We can't let a cross come into the box without getting a head on it. It's that simple. Once they got the shot off, we didn't have much of a chance to stop them."
Loyola rounded out the scoring at the 57:12 mark with Vera played a nice ball down the right sideline to Moroto-Arizza, who played it into the middle to a wide-open Laura Trevillon, who controlled the pass and then knocked it into the corner of the goal.
Sophomore Shannon Saunders made six saves in her first career start in goal, replacing Kelly Zinkiewich who was sidelined with a mild concussion suffered at Detroit on Friday.
The Vikings remain at home this week for a pair of matches, hosting Milwaukee on Friday (Oct. 10) at 7:00 p.m. and IUPUI on Sunday (Oct. 12) at 12:00 noon at Krenzler Field.
