CLEVELAND, Ohio -- IPFW's Brittany Saylor scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with just 1:14 left, as the Mastodons held off the Vikings, 2-1, on Sunday at Krenzler Field.

"This is a terribly dissapointing loss," head coach Derrek Falor said. "We played even with IPFW for 88 minutes and one defensive miscue cost us the match.

"We had our opportunities to win today that we have to begin taking advantage of if we hope to have some success."

With the scored tied at 1-1 in the final minutes and the match appeared to be headed for overtime, IPFW's Danielle Orlandella made a run down the left sideline, broke towards goal and sent a pass cross field to an open Saylor at the top of the box. Saylor collected the pass and arched a shot over Viking goalkeeper Allie Zajaros for the match-winner.

"We made the mistake of not matching up defensively in transition and left an open player at the top of the circle. It proved to be a fatal mistake," Falor said.

IPFW opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Chelsea Smith launched a shot from the right side that Viking starting goalkeeper Erin Withrow stopped, but could not control. The rebound bounced out to Saylor who quickly slid a shot past Withrow.

CSU came right back, scoring the equalizer at the 13:52 mark. Jennifer Wieand made a long run down the right side off a pass from Lisa Conway and beat the IPFW goalie from 15 yards out. It was the first goal of the year for Wieand, who led the team with two goals last year.

"Jennifer continues to get better and better offensively," Falor said. "She was able to make a nice run with the ball and then get into a position to take a good shot on goal."

The match was a defensive tussle from the start as the two squads combined to take just 15 shots with IPFW owning a 9-6 edge. Withrow made three saves during the first half before yielding to Zajaros at the intermission for the third straight contest.

The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-10 on the year. CSU returns to the field on Friday (Sept. 30) when they open the Horizon League schedule at defending regular season champion UW-Milwaukee.
