TOLEDO, Ohio -- Host Toledo scored three goals over an 11 minute period early in the second half to claim a 4-0 win over Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon at Wayne High School field.

The loss dropped CSU to 0-2 on the young season while Toledo claimed its opener to improve to 1-0.

"I don't think that we made any progress since Friday night's match," head coach Derrek Falor said. "Our organizational lapses on defense proved to be costly. Toledo did a nice job of using the width of the field to its advantage and brought players up the field from position to position very well."

"I thought that we had some stretches where we played some very solid soccer. Even after Toledo scored three goals in a short period, we were able to regroup and play the last 20 minutes of the match strong."

A defensive miscue allowed Toledo to take a 1-0 lead at halftime. Toledo's Rebecca Hollis sent a cross from the left side into the box and Viking goalie Allie Zajaros was unable to reach it, allowing freshman Pene Hughes to gather it and send it into the open net.

The score held until the 59th minute when the Rockets went on a scoring burst, scoring three goals in a 10:24 span.

Hughes started the run at the 58:42 mark with her second goal of the match with Kelly Langenbeck and Sarah Hazenfield receiving assists.

The Rockets made it 3-0 just 101 second later when Langenbeck tallied an unassisted goal, her first of the season.

Lindsey Zembower closed out the scoring at the 69:06 mark when she took a pass from Sarah Crane and redirected it past CSU's Ashley Kidwell.

Toledo held a decisive 29-2 shot advantage in the match with the Rockets Jen Whipple (79 minutes) and Molly Patterson (11 minutes) each stopping one shot to combine for the shutout.

Zajaros played the first half in goal for CSU, stopping seven shots and allowing one goal. Kidwell made her CSU debut in the second half, allowing three goals and making five saves.

With severe thunderstorms hitting the Toledo area both Saturday night and on Sunday morning leading up to game time, the match was played on a soft and marshy field.

"The rain made the field a challenge for us, but it was the same for both teams. The grass was much longer than we are used to playing on but we need to be able to adjust to things like weather conditions and the playing field in order to be successful."

The Vikings resume play with a pair of matches this week, playing at Marshall on Friday night (Sept. 3) before returning home to host Duquesne on Sunday (Sept. 5) at 7 p.m. at Foltz Field in Strongsville.
