HUNTINGTON, WV -- Marshall scored a goal in each half, both on loose balls in the box, as Cleveland State dropped a 2-0 decision to the Thundering Herd on Sunday at Marshall's Sam Hood Field.

The contest was the 2009 season opener for both teams.

"This was terribly disappointing because we are a much better team than we showed today," seventh year Viking head coach Derrek Falor said. "After playing so well in the two exhibition matches, we went out and didn't do the things that we needed to do to win. All of our little flaws came out today.

"We started the match out pretty well, had a corner kick and took several shots but then things turned sour. It seemed like we were a step slow all afternoon, which meant that we couldn't attack in form with numbers. It changed the whole pace of the game."

Marshall's Erika Duncan opened the scoring at the 25:26 mark when she blasted home the rebound of a deflected shot inside the box.

The 1-0 lead held until the 55th minute when Kristen Berquist finished a corner kick off the foot of Angela DeSumma inside the box. Marshall had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks in the contest.

The Vikings were out-shot, 15-6 in the contest with CSU goalie Kelly Zinkiewich making six saves. Marshall's Liz Orton made four saves to record the shutout.

CSU continues the non-conference portion of its season with a pair of matches this week, traveling to Kent State on Friday (Aug. 28) for a 4:00 p.m. contest before returning hjome to host Eastern Illinois on Sunday (Aug. 30) at 12:00 noon at Krenzler Field.
