CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State scored two second half goals to rally for a 2-1 victory over Duquesne in the 2011 home opener on Sunday afternoon at Krenzler Field.
The win improved the Vikings to 1-1, while the Dukes fell to 1-1.
The start of the game was delayed by about 15 minutes as torrential rains made their way through downtown Cleveland, forcing both teams to abandon warm-ups for about 20 minutes. But once the rain made its way through, the afternoon turned into a sunny ordeal.
Duquesne scored first, using a goal by Michelle Mooren at the 7:26 mark to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead. Mooren followed up a shot by Morgan Herbert who had her initial shot saved.
It stayed that way until three minutes into the second half when the Vikings scored off a set play from 30 yards out.
Carla Ragone began the free kick by touching it to Natalie Daniels who worked her way up the left sideline before sending a ball into the box where Lyndsay Strahorn one-timed it home to knot the contest.
It was the freshman's second goal in as many games this season.
CSU took its first lead of the afternoon with just over 10 minutes left in the game, this time on another set piece.
After a Duquesne foul just outside the box, Daniels and Valerie Stahl lined up behind the ball. Daniels stepped over the ball before Stahl struck it with her right foot, finding the lower left corner for her third career goal.
Sarah Wood made two saves for the Vikings to earn the win.
CSU outshot the Dukes, 16-5, while both teams attempted six corner kicks.
The Vikings are back in action on Wednesday (Aug. 24) afternoon when CSU heads to Robert Morris for a 4:00 p.m. match.
