Cleveland State Women's Soccer Drops HL Opener to IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Cleveland State (3-3-2, 0-1-0) opened Horizon League play on Thursday evening with a 4-2 setback against IUPUI (5-0-3, 1-0-0). The Vikings will look to bounce back at home on Sunday against Detroit.

THE GAME
The Vikings claimed the first lead of the game in the 19th minute as Mayra Sesmas scored her team-best fourth goal of the year off a pass from Maria Bashardoust. IUPUI tied the game in the 34th minute on a Maya Lacognato penalty kick.

The league opener moved into the half tied at 1-1 with the Jags holding a slim 5-4 edge in shots.

IUPUI started the second half quickly as Sam Slimak scored just a minute in off a pass from Makenna Collins to lead for the first time, 2-1. The Jaguars extended their advantage to 3-1 in the 57th minute on Slimak's second goal of the half off an assist from Leah Shumate.

Erica Leinweber brought Cleveland State to within 3-2 in the 82nd minute with an unassisted goal. However, IUPUI answered back three minutes later with the final tally of the game, winning the league opener, 4-2.

The Jags held a 13-11 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Green and White took four corners compared to two for IUPUI. Leinweber finished with a game-high four shots off the bench. Liv Fain took the loss in goal, making just a save on the night.
