Vikings Fall at Northern Kentucky, 1-0, in Opening Round of League Tournament

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The sixth-seeded Cleveland State women's soccer team had its season come to an end with a 1-0 setback at third-seeded Northern Kentucky in the first round of the Horizon League Championship on Monday night.

The Vikings close the season at 8-10-1 overall, while NKU improved to 11-5-1 this season. The Norse advanced to the league semifinals where they will face second-seeded Oakland in a semifinal match on Thursday night in Milwaukee.

Top-seeded Milwaukee wil hosts fourth-seeded Wright State in the other semifinal. The Raiders advanced with a 2-1 victory over Valparaiso in tonight's other first round match.

After a scoreless first half in tonight's match, the Norse registered the lone goal of the contest at the 57:56 mark when Kelsey Laumann headed a cross toward the goal that deflected off a CSU defender and into the back of the net.

The Norse outshot the Vikings, 15-11, but CSU had a 3-2 lead in shots on goal. The Vikings best scoring opportunity just 7:30 into the contest when Haleigh Shingary got behind the defense in the box, but her shot was saved by NKU goalkeeper Brooke Schocker with her foot.

Vickie Havas controlled the rebound, but her shot was just wide.
