Havas Ties CSU Career Goal Record in 2-0 Win Over Canisius

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Vickie Havas tied the CSU career record with her 19th goal and Cleveland State used a strong defensive effort to earn a 2-0 shutout over Canisius on Friday night at a rainy Krenzler Field.

The Vikings, who snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 4-3-1 overall. Canisius fell to 2-4-2.

After a scoreless first half, Havas put the Vikings on the board in the 55th minute with her third goal of the season and the 19th of her career, tying Natalie Daniels for the school record for most career goals.

Havas' initial shot was saved by Canisius goalkeeper Kailee Defranks, but Havas was able to gather the rebound and score.

Ashley Thiss iced the game with her first career goal with just under three minutes to play.

Kaila Sargema started the play, touching a through ball from just beyond midfield and Thiss was able to slip behind the Canisius defense, beating Defranks 1-on-1.

The Viking defensive backline of Marissa Sarsfield, Erin O'Toole, Sydney McCourt and Carly Cerny were strong all game, helping limit Canisius to just five shots and just two on goal. Jamie Daniels made two saves to earn the shutout.

CSU is back in action on Sunday (Sept. 13) with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Kent State.
