Upcoming Women's Event
November 7-8: Cleveland State Invitational
Course/Location/Holes: TPC at Virginia Beach Intercollegiate/Virginia Beach, Va./36
Yards/Par: 6,056/72
Teams: 15 -- Boston, Chicago State, Cleveland State, High Point, Hofstra, IPFW, IUPUI, Long Island, McNeese State, Old Dominion, Ohio, Sacred Heart, South Carolina State, Wagner & Wyoming

Chip Ins: The women's golf team finishes its fall slate as the Vikings travel to Virginia Beach, Va. for the TPC at Virginia Beach Intercollegiate on Nov. 7-8. Hosted for the second year in a row by Old Dominion, the 15-team field will challenge the TPC's 6,056-yard, par 72 Pete Dye design.

Head Coach Tom Porten: Tom Porten is in his 14th season at the helm of the Viking men's program. He guided the team to its first ever Horizon League Championship in 1998. He was instrumental in founding the women's program in 2001 and was named the league coach of the year just two seasons later. A three-time letterwinner and captain of the golf team, he graduated from CSU in 1990. After serving as an assistant for the Vikings during the 1990-91 season, he assumed the head coaches' role the following year.

Porten's Take: "I am excited to close out our fall schedule at a venue like a Pete Dye-designed TPC course. We were playing much better last week before the rain moved in. This week will be a good test of just how far we've come this fall."

The Last Time Out: The Vikings competed at F & M Bank Austin Peay Invitational on Oct. 25-26. Paced by junior Kristen Obush's 81, Cleveland State stood in 12th at the completion of Monday's round with a 345. However, Tuesday's final round was cancelled due to heavy rain and unplayable conditions. Princeton led the 16-team field with a 315. Melissa Reeves (Wichita State), Sharla Cloutier (Princeton) and Nikki Orazine (Murray State) tied for the individual lead at 75.

Newcomers Contribute: Tom Porten's recruiting efforts last year have paid dividends for the women's team in the fall. Freshmen Amanda Glatfelter and Trish Randall have played all 10 rounds while junior transfer Lexi Retzer has eight rounds under her belt. Glatfelter is second on the team with an 85.9 scoring average and paced the squad at the Huskie Classic (10/3-4) with a 169 to finish 11th. Randall has played very well of late, carding a 175 to finish at team-best 13th at the CSU Invitational (10/11-12). Randall is third on the team with a 90.0 scoring average.

Obush Wears Third Crown: Junior Kristen Obush claimed her third career tournament title at the Butler Fall Invitational on Sept. 20-21. She posted consistent rounds of 78-77-78 to finish at 233 -- three shots clear of the rest of the field. She also claimed medalist honors in the Bucknell Lady Bison Classic and the Malone Fall Invitational as a freshman in 2002-03. Obush also has runner-up finishes at last year's Horizon League Championship and CSU Invitational to her credit.

How Low Can You Go?: Sophomore Mike Rutgers' career-low 66 in the second round at the John Dallio Memorial Invitational on Sept. 27, not only gave him the overnight tournament lead, it broke the school single-round scoring mark. The old record of 67 was set by Christian Komsa at the Ohio Collegiate Classic on Oct. 23, 2000.

Barbershop Stays Open For The Winter: Freshman Doug Barber has found a unique way to stay busy and in shape in between golf seasons -- the Willoughby native will walk on the men's basketball team. A first team all-district selection at guard as a senior at Willoughby South HS, he was the News Herald and Plain Dealer Player of the Year for Lake and Geauga County. He will more than likely suit up as a shooting guard for the Vikings.
