Off The Tee: Both the men's and women's teams open their 2004-05 schedules this week at Bowling Green. The men will play on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 13-14) in the John Piper Intercollegiate at Stone Ridge GC, while the women hit the links on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 18-19) in the Falcon Fall Invitational at Forest Creason GC.

Head Coach Tom Porten: Tom Porten begins his 14th season at the helm of the Viking men's program. He guided the team to its first ever Horizon League Championship in 1998. He was instrumental in founding the women's program in 2001 and was named the league coach of the year just two seasons later. A three-time letterwinner and captain of the golf team, he graduated from CSU in 1990. After serving as an assistant for the Vikings during the 1990-91 season, he assumed the head coaches' role the following year.

John Piper Intercollegiate: Cleveland State will take part in Bowling Green's John Piper Intercollegiate for the fourth consecutive year. Played at the nearly 7,000-yard, par 72 Stone Ridge Golf Club, the Vikings are part of a 15-team field that includes Horizon League foes Butler, Detroit, UW-Green Bay, Wright State and Youngstown State. Last year, CSU finished 12th as Billy Houle paced the squad with a 226 (74-74-78) to place 22nd.

Falcon Fall Invitational: The women will open fall play at Bowling Green for the second consecutive year. The Falcon Fall Invitational is held at the 6,097-yard, par 72 Forrest Creason Golf Course and features a nine-team field. In 2003, Kristen Obush finished 20th, firing rounds of 84 and 80 as the team came in ninth.

Porten's Take: "While both teams will only have one upperclassman in the starting line-up, I'll be looking for different results. On the men's side, this is my youngest team in almost a decade, so I'm looking for constant improvement. With the women, I'm looking for us to finish in the top half of the field right out of the gate."

Vikings Return Co-Player Of The Year: Junior Kristen Obush will anchor the Viking line-up after earning Horizon League Co-Player of the Year honors in 2004. At the league championship, she shot a second-place score of 242 to finish three-shots out of the lead. After opening the tournament with an uncharacteristic 84, Obush rebounded in the afternoon round with a championship-low 75. She complimented it with an 83 -- the second-best score on a blustery final day. A two-time all-league selection, she is a co-captain this season along with senior Nancy Bowling.

Newcomers Make Immediate Impact: Youth will defintely be served this season on both the men's and women's teams. The women boast three freshman in their starting five, while the men have a pair of newcomers. Both squads feature just one upperclassman -- junior Cody Harris on the men's side and junior Kristen Obush for the women -- in among this week's starters.
