Eight Vikings Named to Horizon League Spring Academic All-League Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Eight student-athletes from Cleveland State were selected to the Horizon League Spring All-Academic Team that was announced on Wednesday (July 15).

Earning spots on the team were men's tennis players Rob Fox, Rob West and Steven Wipprecht, softball standouts Shay Adams, Brittany Bate and Amanda Houchin and women's golfers Laren Beese and Katie Broere.

The trio of Fox, West and Wipprecht helped lead the Vikings to their second straight league title and berth in the NCAA tournament.

A native of The Netherlands, Fox carries a 3.80 GPA as a business administration major. The senior went 22-13, playing predominantly No. 5 singles this year.

West, a senior from Guernsey, United Kingdom, was named to the academic team after carrying a 3.73 grade point average as a psychology/management and labor relations major. He earned a spot on the All-Horizon League second team this past season after going 19-16 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.

Wipprecht, who served as the President of CSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Council this past year, sports a 3.88 GPA as a management and labor relations major. The senior, who captured the Herb Foster Sportsmanship Award this year, played at No. 6 singles.

Adams, a senior from Celina, Ohio, came into her own this season to earn a spot on the All-Horizon League second team. The outfielder hit .323 with 13 runs, two doubles, one triple, one homer and 17 runs batted in. She sports a 3.43 GPA as a finance major.

A native of Gross Point Woods, Mich., Bate has maintained a 3.86 GPA as a psychology and criminology major. The sophomore was CSU's No. 2 pitcher this year, posting a 5-3 mark with a 3.83 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 15 appearances. She made six starts and threw four complete games.

Houchin, who batted .342 with 10 doubles, 11 homers and 36 RBI this season, earned a spot on the second team All-Horizon League. The senior from Lima, Ohio, has a 3.47 GPA as a criminology major.

The softball trip helped the Vikings capture the Horizon League Championship and a spot at the NCAA Championships for just the second time in school history (1997).

The duo of Beese and Broere earned spots on the team after helping the Vikings to a program-best second place finish at the Horizon League Championship.

Beese, a junior from Massillon, Ohio, garnered a spot on the all-academic team after maintaining a 3.72 GPA as a spanish major. She averaged 85.4 in seven tournaments this year.

Broere, a communications major with a 3.75 GPA, enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history. The junior from Bracebridge, Ontario, posted a school-record scoring average of 79.5 per round in nine events (22 rounds). She tied for fifth place at the league tournament to earn a spot on the all-tournament team and became just the second player in school history to earn a spot on the All-Horizon League first team.

To be eligible for Academic All-Horizon League consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher and have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 36 quarter-hour credits.
