AKRON, Ohio - Cleveland State shot an opening round 349 and is in sixth place out of seven teams at the 4th Annual Zippy Invitational that began on Monday at the par-71, 5,833-yard Rosemont C.C.

"Unfortunately, teams are always going to have a round or two like this all season and today was ours," head coach Steve Wier said. "There were some tough conditions out there today with the wind and a wet course. But that's not an excuse.

"We have to remember that we still have a fairly young team and we'll have days like this. The big thing is how we respond tomorrow and I challenged them to forget about today and come back strong tomorrow. So we'll see how we regroup and play in tomorrow's final round."

Akron leads the tournament after a first round 301 and is followed by Eastern Kentucky (317), Ohio (331), Bowling Green (332), Walsh (337), Cleveland State (349) and Youngstown State (352).

Sophomore Madeline Kaminski is tied for 21st overall after a first round 85, while junior Lisa Barber is tied for 23rd following an opening round 86.

Katie Jenior of Akron and Megan Weaver of Ohio are tied for the lead after each shot 73.

The event concludes with the final 18 holes on Tuesday (Oct. 18) at 10:00 a.m. It will be CSU's final round of the fall season.
