MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Cleveland State is tied for 10th place out of 16 teams after carding an opening round 327 at the Richmond Spider Invitational on Monday.

The two-day, 36-hole event is being played at the par-72, 6,113-yard International Golf Club.

"I thought we played pretty well today considering the conditions were a lot more difficult than the practice round yesterday," assistant coach Nathan Miklos said. "The overall scores were a little higher than I expected they would be and we are kind of bunched together with a group of teams. Hopefully we can come out tomorrow and put together a good round to close our fall season and give us some confidence heading into the spring."

CSU, which is tied with Bucknell, is seven shots back of Hampton for eighth place, nine shots behind Old Dominion and Penn State for sixth place, 10 shots back of Marshall for fifth place and 11 shots behind Penn, which is in fourth.

Longwood leads the event after a 302 and is followed by Maryland (303) and Richmond (313) in the top three.

Seniors Katie Broere and Laren Beese led the Vikings with rounds of 81, while freshman Ariel Sparrow carded an 82 and freshman Lisa Barber an 83.

"It's always good to have your top four players in the low 80's," Miklos said. "Now if we can get one or two of them to knock a couple strokes off, we will be in great position."

The final round is slated for Tuesday, Oct. 13, with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
