MUNCIE, Ind. - Cleveland State had three players shoot in the 70's en route to carding a school-record 316 in the first round of the Ball State Cardinal Classic on Monday morning at the par-72, 6,248-yard Delaware C.C.

Today's round bettered the old school record of 318 set two times last season, including in the final round of the Horizon League Championship.

It marked the second time in as many events this fall that CSU had three players in the 70's. Prior to this season, it had never happened in the history of the program.

"We really played well today, probably the best round since I have been here," head coach Steve Weir said. "We are playing a tough golf course that is very long and that normally doesn't suit us well. But we chipped and putted as good as we ever have and that saved a lot of strokes for us.

"We really put a lot of time and effort into improving our short games last week and I think it really showed today. This is a deep and talented field and I was happy to see that we were able to come in with a low score."

The duo of junior Laren Beese and freshman Brittany Keiter paced the Vikings as both shot four-over-par 76. They will enter Tuesday's final round tied for 10th place, just five shots back of Simone DeSouza of California (Pa.) who shot a 71.

Keiter shot a 39 on the front and 37 on the back, while Beese went 36-40.

Junior Katie Broere is tied for 25th following a 78 (37-41).

The Vikings are just four shots back of California (Pa.) and Ohio who are tied for sixth place at 312.

Ball State finished with the lead after shooting a 302. They are followed by Grand Valley State and Akron (305), Indiana State (306) and Northern Arizona (308).

The two-day, 36-hole event will conclude with the final 18 holes on Tuesday with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start.
