Vikings Tied for First After Round One of Baldwin Wallace Invitational

COLUMBIA HILLS, Ohio - Cleveland State fired an opening round 327 and is tied for first place after the opening round of the Baldwin Wallace Invitational on Saturday at the par-72, 6,154-yard Creekwood G.C.

In addition, freshman Ariel Sparrow is tied for second overall following her first round 77.

The Vikings are tied with Clarion, which also carded a 327 in the first round.

"We didn't play our best today, but we hung in there and battled all day," head coach Steve Weir said. "We left a couple of shots out on the course today, but we are still in position to come out and win the tournament tomorrow."

In addition to Sparrow's round, the Vikings boasted the third and fourth best rounds of the day. Senior Katie Broere is in third place after an 80, while senior Laren Beese was one shot back in fourth place.

Sophomore Victoria Aseltine shot a 91 and was the Vikings fourth finisher and is tied for 20th. Freshman Annie Teicher had to withdraw from the tournament.

Freshman Lisa Barber, playing as an individual, is tied for ninth place after an 85.

Gannon was in third place at 352.

Clarion's Jenna Rinker holds the lead in the individual race after an opening round 73, four shots ahead of Sparrow.

The Vikings are back in action when they compete in the second and final round of the tournament tomorrow.
