DRAPER, Va. - Cleveland State shot a final round 317, the second best round in school history, and placed fourth of nine teams at the season opening Draper Valley Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

Combined with its opening round 318, CSU finished with a school-record 36 hole total of 335.

"This was a great way for us to open the season," assistant coach Nathan Miklos said. "We played well both days and were very consistent with our games. We have a short week before we play again and still have to work on some things, but overall, I am very pleased."

CSU's top three finishers were all within two strokes of each other. Freshman Ariel Sparrow was the Vikings top placer, finishing 15th overall after rounds of 80-76 (156). Senior Katie Broere was one shot back, tied for 16th, with rounds of 77-80 (157), while senior Laren Beese was 19th after rounds of 77-81 (158).

Freshman Annie Teicher tied for 32nd at 164 (84-80).

"Katie and Laren did a great job of hanging in there today and our freshman really stepped up and performed well in their first tournament," Miklos said.

The Vikings will return to action at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 12-13).
