LEXINGTON, Ky. - Cleveland State shot a final round 323 and moved up one spot in the standings, finishing a program best second out of six teams at the 2009 Horizon League Championship. The 54-hole event concluded with the final 18 holes on Sunday at Kearney Hills G.C.

CSU's previous best finish at the league championship was fourth place on four occasions (2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008).

The Vikings finished with a three-round total of 985, finishing 17 shots behind champion Youngstown State (968). Loyola finished third overall at 994 and was followed by Detroit (996) in fourth place, Butler (1,000) in fifth and Green Bay in sixth (1,068).

"Although we didn't win the tournament, I am extremely pleased and excited with the way we played all weekend," head coach Steve Weir said. "I knew coming in that if we played to our potential, we would be able to contend for the championship. And although we fell a little short, I think this shows the tremendous strides we have made in the program over the last two years.

"Each player just went out and played relaxed," Weir said. "We limited our mental mistakes and played the course like we needed to. This performance will give us something to build on for the summer as we prepare for next season."

Senior Mallory Wyderka shot a 75 today, the lowest round of the tournament, and wound up tied for second place in the individual race at 241 (84-82-75). She earned a spot on the all-tournament team for the second straight season, while placing in the top-10 of the league championship for the third consecutive season.

"Mallory had a great weekend and really played well today," Weir said. "It was a nice way for her to end her brilliant career her at CSU."

In addition to Wyderka, junior Katie Broere and freshman Brittany Keiter also notched top-10 finishes.

Broere carded a total of 242 (80-82-80), tying for fifth place overall and joining Wyderka on the all-tournament team. In addition, Broere was the lone Viking chosen to the all-league team.

"Katie had a special season this year, but she has the potential to be even better," Weir said. "If she continues her tremendous work ethic, she will be primed for a special senior season."

Broere became just the second player in school history to earn all-league kudos, joining Kristen Obush who was selected to the squad four times (2003-06).

Keiter capped an outstanding freshman campaign by tying for eighth place at the league championship, firing rounds of 87-78-81 (246).

The league championship concludes the 2008-09 season for CSU.
