HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Cleveland State women's golf team shaved six strokes off its first round score, carding a 332 on Saturday in the second round of the Horizon League Championship to move into a tie for third place after 36 holes.

The 54 hole event is being played at the par-73, 5,884-yard Mission Inn Resort.

The Vikings, who trailed third place Loyola by nine shots after yesterday's first round, made up those nine shots today as the Ramblers shot 341. Butler leads the tournament with rounds of 333-317 (650), while Detroit is four shots back at 654 (326-328).

Youngstown State is in fifth place at 678 (346-332), while Valparaiso is in sixth at 687 (343-344) and Green Bay in seventh at 703 (356-347).

"I am so proud of the way we have played these first two days," head coach Steve Weir said. "The girls have really kept their focus and managed this course well in the first two rounds.

"From day one, I knew this team had the potential and it was a matter of getting them out on the course and playing some rounds. They have been showing steady improvement each and every tournament and hopefully we can keep our confidence and focus going into tomorrow's final round."

Sophomore Ariel Sparrow was solid all day, carding CSU's low round of the tournament so far with an 80 today. She made 11 pars and seven bogeys in a very solid round, allowing her to move up to seventh place in the individual standings at 163 (83-80).

Freshman Micaela Cronin used an eagle-birdie run on the 14th and 15th holes en route to an 82 and is tied for ninth place at 166 (84-82). The eagle-birdie combo helped Cronin card a one-over-par 38 on the inward nine.

Freshman Shelly Ford made three birdies today to shoot an 83 and is tied for 15th place at 169 (86-83), while Lisa Barber is tied for 21st at 172 (85-87) and Madeline Kaminski is tied for 25th at 176 (88-88).

The final round of the league championship will be played on Sunday (April 24). CSU's first group will tee off at 8:20 a.m.
