HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Cleveland State women's golf team shot an opening round 338 and is in fourth place of seven teams after the first round of the Horizon League Championship.

The three-day, 54-hole event is being played at the par-73, 5,884-yard Mission Inn Resort.

"I thought we got off to a great start today, hit a little bump in the road, but regrouped to finish strong," head coach Steve Weir said. "We really hung in there and battled hard today.

"I like the position we have put ourselves in after the first round. There are two days left and we will have to continue to play focused and limit our mental mistakes."

Sophomore Ariel Sparrow shot the Vikings low round of the day with an 83 and is tied for ninth place overall as CSU's quintet was well bunched with just five shots separating its top golfer from its fifth finisher.

Freshman Micaela Cronin is tied for 12th after an 84, while sophomore Lisa Barber shot an 85 and is tied for 15th. Freshman Shelly Ford was one back after an 86 and is tied for 17th, while freshman Madeline Kaminski is tied for 23rd following an 88.

The league championship continues with the second round on Saturday (April 23) morning.
