MUNDELEIN, Ill. - Cleveland State is in fifth place after the opening day of the Loyola Invitational at the par 72, 6,010-yard Pine Meadow Golf Course. Northern Illinois holds the team lead at the midway point of the tournament.

The Huskies, who put together a 319, are seven strokes ahead of Butler, while Loyola and IPFW are at 333 and the Vikings posted a 342.

Butler's Niki Garden carded a 73 to stand four shots clear of Northern Illinois' Kim Hunley and Loyola's Lucy McGovern in the race for medalist. Sophomore Mallory Wyderka posted CSU's top score with an 83 and is tied for eighth.

"I thought there were some things we did pretty well today," CSU head coach Brian Varsey said. "The course was in great shape and it was nice to get out and play after dealing with the weather in Cleveland the past couple of weeks."

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
