BATAVIA, Ohio - Cleveland State shot an opening round 335 on Monday and is in fifth place after the first round of the Cincinnati Invitational. The event is being played at the par-71, 6,053-yard Elks Run Golf Course.

CSU is just three shots behind third place Butler and IPFW, who both shot 332, while Youngstown State occupies second place after an opening round 327.

Host Cincinnati leads the event after carding a 315 in the first round.

The Vikings also posted a 163 in the afternoon nine hole round, which will be concluded on Tuesday morning before the final 18 holes in the afternoon.

"This is a deep, talented field and to be sitting within three shots of third place and eight shots of second place is great," head coach Steve Weir said. "The team has been making big strides throughout the spring season and we took another step today.

"Once again, we played in terrible weather conditions. This was one of the wettest courses I have ever seen, but it didn't phase the team. We are a physically and mentally tough team and it has shown this spring."

Junior Mallory Wyderka fired an 80 in the opening round and is tied for eighth place in the individual race. Sophomore Katie Broere shot an 81 and is tied for ninth, while Laren Beese, Ashley Davidson and Kim Dulski are all tied for 35th after all shooting 87.

The 54-hole event will conclude with teams playing nine holes in the morning before playing the final 18 holes in the afternoon.
