ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Cleveland State women's golf team opened the 2009 spring season on Friday when the Vikings competed in the first round of the Winthrop Invitational at Rock Hill C.C.

CSU opened the tournament with a round of 358, placing 11th of 12 teams.

"This was a tough course and we really didn't play like we are capable of playing," assistant coach Nathan Miklos said. "I think we still have a long way to go. Most of the scores were high, but we are a better team than this. Hopefully we can battle back and come back with a lower round tomorrow."

Katie Broere led the Vikings with a round of 84, while Laren Beese fired a 90.

The Vikings will be back in action on Saturday, March 21, when CSU competes in the second round of the Winthrop Invitational.
